Description

“Einsatz Reinhardt” (Operation Reinhardt) was launched on the night of 16/17 March 1942. This codename referred to the mass extermination of Jews by German and Austrian Nazis in the area created in October 1939 from the parts of the occupied Polish territories called the Generalgouvernement (General Government, GG). Between March 1942 and November 1943, approximately 1,500,000 Jews were murdered in the gas chambers of Bełżec, Sobibór, and Treblinka, the majority of them were the former citizens of the Second Polish Republic. Furthermore, several hundred thousand lost their lives in ghettos, in the Majdanek concentration camp, in labour camps, as well as during many mass executions […]. “Einsatz Reinhardt” was one of the most horrifying episodes in the history of the 20th century.
